The Argument May Not Really Be About the Argument
Imagine one partner says:
"You never help around here."
The other hears:
"You're a terrible partner."
They respond defensively.
The first person hears the defensiveness as proof that their feelings don't matter.
Now they're arguing about tone instead of housework.
Underneath the conflict may be very different messages:
"I'm overwhelmed and need to know we're a team."
"I'm afraid nothing I do will ever be good enough for you."
